Cold-water coral taxonomy training school

This 3-day capacity building event on cold-water coral taxonomy will take place at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Florianópolis, on 15-17 October 2022 (directly after the iAtlantic General Assembly).

The course will be led by Alberto Lindner and Renata Arantes, with support from Marcelo Kitahara and Livia Loiola, covering concepts on deep-water coral taxonomy, as well as diversity and distribution, with focus on taxonomy and hands on experiences observing deep-water coral specimens, particularly from Brazil. We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Marine Animal Forest of the World (MAF-WORLD) COST Action on this training event.

The training is a practical, lab-based event so participant numbers are restricted.  Register early!

Training school venue

The workshop will be held at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Please note that the university is located 20 km away from the GA2022 resort (c.30 minute drive – see map, right). The university is closer to hotels in downtown Florianópolis (~7km) so we advise participants to stay close by in town (see options below).

Accommodation
Workshop participants are responsible for booking and paying for their accommodation during the workshop, as well as their travel to/from the venue. Hotel options close to campus (less than 2km):
  • hotelquintadabicadagua.com.br/site/
  • voila-hostel.hotelflorianopolis.com/pt/

Programme
  • Saturday 15 October, 9am-6pm: Hexacorallia (Scleractinia)
  • Sunday 16 October, 9am-6pm: Hydrozoa (Stylasteridae) and Hexacorallia (Antipatharia)
  • Monday 17 October, 9am – 6pm: Octocorallia, and coral identification using ROV

You can download the detailed programme here (PDF).

Some basic reading material will be circulated to attendees prior to the workshop. For attendees that wish to spend an extra day observing deep-water coral specimens from Brazil we will be happy to discuss the possibilities on a case-by-case basis.

Lunches and coffee will be provided during the workshop.

How to register

Registration is now open – please complete the online registration form here (note that this is a separate registration process to the GA2022 – you must register for the two events separately). The registration deadline for this workshop is Wednesday 21 September 2022.

This training event is open to everyone, including those who are not part of the iAtlantic project. However, we do have limits on numbers and will manage registrations accordingly – we will accommodate as many participants as possible, but if necessary priority may be given to iAtlantic/MAF participants. Please register early!

Support for travel costs

We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Marine Animal Forest of the World (MAF-WORLD) COST Action for this training school. A small number of travel bursaries are available through MAF-WORLD to support participation in this workshop, particularly for participants who are not part of the iAtlantic project.
